Due to what appeared to be an ankle injury, Lionel Messi had to leave the Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia early in the second half on Sunday night.
The 37-year-old soccer legend was substituted out of what may have been his last significant international competition after 65 minutes of play.
Messi fell and alerted the trainers right away to need assistance. Even though it looked like Messi was trying to sprint as quickly as possible, he stumbled over his own feet.
Messi is leaving the field carefully, taking off his right shoe and taking off his captain’s jersey. Later, Messi was spotted crying and hiding his face on the Argentina sidelines while wearing an ice pack on his right ankle.
After Messi left the field, Nicolás Gonzále took his position.
Messi hurts ankle in first half
Messi attempted to chase and hit a ball before it went out of bounds during the first half. Before he could kick away, he placed his right foot, which twisted awkwardly. Messi screamed in pain and repeatedly rolled over toward the field so that trainers could assess him.
Messi ultimately got to his feet and moved away on his own, but not without a noticeable handicap. After suffering the injury in the first half at minute 36, Messi was able to finish the match.
After being taken off injured during the second half of the 2024 Copa America final against Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Argentina captain Lionel Messi was left heartbroken.
In the 64th minute of play, Messi went to the ground and grabbed his ankle, visibly hurt as both teams tried in vain to break the tie. Soon later, the World Cup-winning captain was replaced by Nicolás González, who might have hurt himself by awkwardly planting his right foot during the match.
With his right shoe in his hand, Messi walked off the field before tossing the boot in a fit of rage. And Messi broke down in tears as he remained on the bench with just 26 minutes remaining before regulation time ended. His teammates comforted him as he cried uncontrollably and covered his face in great despair at the injury and, more importantly, at not being able to play in the final.
The broadcasters even captured footage of his taped right ankle while the Miami audience erupted in chants of “Messi, Messi,” to which Colombian supporters retorted with “James! James! James!” After suffering an ankle injury during the Copa America final, Lionel Messi broke down in tears.
Less than ten minutes remained in the first half of the game when Messi went down after tripping during a chase following an out-of-bounds pass. He grabbed at his lower right leg and rolled over multiple times.
After tending to the region for a short while, trainers assisted him in standing up. He made his way carefully over to the sidelines and then got back into the game.
Messi was absent from Argentina’s group stage match because he had been battling pain and an injury to his leg for the majority of the competition.
Earlier in the evening, thousands of ticketless fans attempted to break through security and enter the stadium, causing the Copa America final to start later than scheduled. Videos of supporters sprinting across concourses and attempting to break through the Hard Rock Stadium gates went popular on social media.
Many fans were stuck outside trying to enter before the match started when police later closed the gates and imposed a lockdown. As the mayhem outside grew, both teams were removed from the field, after suffering an ankle injury during the Copa America final, Lionel Messi broke down in tears.
